Updates from the Public Outreach Committee

The Public Outreach Committee, which looks after fundraising and outreach is investigating the possibility of a special memorial fund to honour the late Mike Nemeroski. See the exert from the September 2009 newsletter:

At its meeting 9 September, the CCC Board of Directors decided too explore the possibility of establishing a Mike Nemeroski Memorial Fund, to which memorial donations and Mike’s bequest would be assigned to yield interest or other gains for long-term use.  That would ensure that the CCC has some funds to continue despite temporary shortages of funds.  The matter is being investigated and will be reported on again.

Speaker Bio

Kelly Schafer came to know the Canadian Chestnut Council through her years of work as Environmental Program Coordinator, Bookings Coordinator and Administration Manager at Tim Horton Onondaga Farms (2002 to present). The CCC operates one of its important breeding plots at the camp (near St. George, ON) where children and guests of all ages have the opportunity to learn about the environment and other program areas such as agriculture, astronomy and adventure.

In March 2002 the CCC contracted Kelly as their Outreach Coordinator to expand public awareness of American chestnut recovery.

Kelly attended College for two diplomas, including Fish & Wildlife Technologist at Sir Sandford Fleming College where studies included forest, fisheries and wildlife management.

Presentation Overview

The CCC is eager to spread the word about the history and current status of the American chestnut in Canada through our outreach presentation titled “A Legend in Crisis”.

This 20-60 minute presentation and discussion will introduce the audience to the history, biology and blight affecting this species. It will also include an update on research and conservation strategies aimed at its recovery. Power point and a DVD clip will generally be incorporated.

Great for annual general meetings or other gatherings and can be tailored to suit the needs and interests of different groups.

We are currently booking presentations for service groups, naturalist clubs, classrooms and other interested audiences in southern Ontario.

We are also interested in bringing our display and brochures to your event or meeting.

There is presently no set fee for these services. Membership is appreciated and encouraged so that your group can stay informed about chestnut recovery.

Please contact us for more information.
